Paper tape vs mesh tape: which joint tape to specify
Strength wet and dry, shrinkage, seam hiding, speed and crack behaviour: a straight comparison of paper joint tape and fiberglass mesh tape, with the cases where each one wins.
Both tapes close a joint. They fail differently, and that difference is what should decide the specification.
The short answer
Paper tape for flat seams that must disappear under paint. Mesh tape for repairs, for board that is already finished, and for joints where movement is expected. Most crews keep both on the cart.
Comparison
| Paper tape XJ75150 | Mesh tape XJ4590 | |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Hand or Banjo taper | Self-adhesive, hand only |
| Bed coat needed | Yes | No (joint must still be filled) |
| Wet strength | High | Moderate |
| Behaviour when drying | Shrinks tight into the joint | Does not shrink |
| Hides a tapered seam | Best | Fair |
| Bridges movement | Limited | Good |
| Repair work | Slower | Fast |
| Standard | ASTM C475 | ASTM D579 |
Where paper wins
- Long, straight butt joints and tapered factory edges.
- Work that will be inspected under a raking light.
- Any joint run through an automatic taper.
Where mesh wins
- Patching a hole or a hairline crack in a finished wall.
- Board joints that may move, such as a ceiling under a roof space.
- Render and tile-adhesive reinforcement, where the mesh is the carrier.
The mistake that makes mesh look bad
Mesh is a bridge, not a filler. Taping over an unfilled gap leaves a void that pumps when the wall is loaded, and the compound cracks along the mesh line. Fill first, then tape.

Questions this raises
Can the two be used together?
Yes, and it is common: mesh in the corners and around repairs, paper on the flat seams, one coat over both.
Which is cheaper?
Mesh usually costs less per metre at the roll level, but the labour difference often decides the real cost on a large job.
Need a specification sheet before the price?
Ask for the TDS, the packing list or a loading plan for your mix of products. Samples can travel before the container does.
