Fiberglass self-adhesive mesh tape XJ4590
Self-adhesive glass-fibre mesh from 25 mm to 1200 mm wide, 45–500 g/m², in seven mesh counts and three colours. No bed coat needed: it sticks, then it is skimmed.
XJ4590 is a self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape for drywall joints, plaster rendering and crack repair. It is made in widths from 25 mm to 1200 mm, weights from 45 to 500 g/m² and seven mesh counts from 4×4 to 16×14, tested to ASTM D579. The mesh will not tear, shrink, stretch or bubble, does not rot, and needs no pre-plastering: it presses onto the board, then the compound is skimmed through the openings. Supplied shrink-wrapped or in a plastic hand bag, under private label or neutral packing, plus jumbo rolls of 1200 mm × 450 m and 900 m for converters.

Where mesh tape is the right answer
Mesh is the fast option for repairs, for board that has already been painted, and for joints where a little movement is expected. It also doubles as render reinforcement and as a carrier for tile adhesive on insulation board.
The one rule is that the joint itself must be filled before the tape goes on. The adhesive holds the mesh to the board, not across a void, and a mesh bridging an empty gap will crack exactly where the gap is.
How to apply it
- The wall must be clean and dry.
- Centre the tape over the length of the joint and press it down firmly.
- Apply a generous first coat of compound over the tape and through the mesh, filling the joint crevice completely; wipe off the excess but leave enough to cover the mesh.
- Let it dry completely, then sand lightly.
- Apply thin finishing coats until the surface is smooth.
- On butt joints — cut board ends with no tapered edge — take extra care that the compound penetrates the whole joint, and expect more edge feathering.
Choosing a weight and a mesh count
For a drywall seam, 8×8 or 9×9 at 60–90 g/m² is the working range: fine enough to disappear under compound, open enough to key. For render reinforcement, insulation board and crack bridging, step up in weight and go to 4×4 or 5×5, where the opening is wide and the load is spread over more strands. The 1000 and 1200 mm widths are the ones used for facade and insulation work; the 25–50 mm widths are for drywall joints.
Failures we see, and why
Almost every mesh complaint comes back to one of three things: the joint was not filled first, the compound was too stiff to press through the mesh, or the tape was applied over dust. A setting-type compound rather than a drying-type one gives the best result, because it does not shrink back out of the openings.

Specification questions
Does mesh tape need a bed coat of compound?
No bed coat is needed for the tape to stick, but the joint itself must be filled before taping, otherwise the mesh bridges a void and cracks later.
Can you print our brand on the roll?
Yes — private label, printed cartons and neutral packing are all standard. The mesh is also supplied unlabelled in bulk for converters.
What is ASTM D579?
ASTM D579 is the specification for woven glass fabric tapes for gypsum board joints. It covers the weave, the tensile strength and the adhesive, which is why the mesh count and the weight are quoted together.
Do you supply jumbo rolls for converting?
Yes: 1200 mm × 450 m and 1200 mm × 900 m. Converters slit them to their own widths and print their own cores.
